Ton Jumelet

Ton regularly acts for P&I Clubs, (Hull) insurers, Dutch and foreign ship and yacht owners, charterers, shipbrokers and shipyards (covering both maritime and inland waterway shipping). His work includes handling disputes concerning charters, purchase and building contracts, collisions, salvage, cargo claims, ship arrests, and ship and cargo auctions.

Ton regularly acts as an arbitrator, both in statutory arbitration and in institutional arbitration (UNUM, NAI and LMAA).

Before founding Jumelet Verhagen Advocaten together with Marcel Verhagen in 2002, Ton worked for over 8 years as a legal officer at Dutch P&I Services. In 1999, he was one of the first lawyers to be admitted to the Rotterdam Bar as an in house lawyer (advocaat) for a Defence Club, after which he moved to private practise.

Drawing on his background as a ‘Defence lawyer’, Ton has extensive experience in disputes concerning charter parties (both under Dutch and English law) and bills of lading, as well as in drafting and negotiating (BIMCO) charters, often in connection with long-term charters and special projects such as heavy-lift transport, offshore and wind energy projects.

Ton is regularly involved as a lawyer or arbitrator in proceedings concerning technically complex matters (his father was a Superintendent Engineer), ranging from engine damage, DP systems and ‘motion-compensated’ gangways disputes to disputes over paint quality and corrosion treatment.

Insurance law (hull damage), purchase and shipbuilding contracts, and related financing and security arrangements also form part of Ton’s standard practice.

In 2022, Ton’s practice (inevitably) expanded to include sanctions law, which many of his clients in the international transport sector deal with on a daily basis. For a number of clients, Ton also periodically carries out preventive (automated) deep search compliance checks.

Ton is a member of the Dutch Association for Maritime and Transport Law and the Dutch Association of Transport Lawyers. Ton has registered the following principal area of law in the Dutch Bar Association’s register of legal practice areas:
