Marcel Verhagen

After graduating from Erasmus University in 1992, Marcel was admitted to the bar in Rotterdam. In 2002, he founded Jumelet Verhagen Advocaten together with Ton Jumelet. His practice focuses primarily on shipping, ports and trade. He regularly acts for shipping companies, operators and ship managers, as well as their underwriters, such as P&I Clubs, FDD insurers H&M underwiters. In addition, he amongst others also acts for maritime service providers, ship agents and freight forwarders, other logistics service providers and bunker suppliers.

His practice is characterized by a mix of advisory work and litigation. He regularly advises on (maritime) contracts such as BIMCO contracts, as well as on long-term Service Level Agreements or other logistics contracts.

He is also no stranger to applying for or litigating in relation to (ship) attachments. In his practice, Marcel regularly litigates before the various Dutch courts, as well as in arbitrations before, for example, UNUM, Fenex, ICC or LMAA. Part of his practice involves investigating maritime incidents.

Marcel is now also regularly asked by his clients to act as abat-voix when entering into new contracts or setting up new projects.

Marcel served as chairman of UNUM, the Dutch maritime and logistics arbitration institute, until June 2026. He is a supporting member of the LMAA and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London. He is a member of the Maritime and Transport Law Committee and the Arbitration Committee of the International Bar Association. He is a member of the Dutch Association of Transport Law Lawyers and the Dutch Association for Transport Law. He regularly lectures on legal topics.
